Lip Monthly (March 2015)

I recently decided to try Lip Monthly.  I'm not real big on lip products other than balms, and if I'm going to do a color, it's usually a nude.  Honestly, the reviews I read haven't been very complementary, so I didn't have high expectations, but I did have a coupon code, so what the hell.  The monthly subscription is only $10, but using code "1ST5", you'll get $5 off.

"Every month Lip Monthly's experts travel across the country to find the best products in retail stores, so you don't have to. They bring you the best deals on the market, in a beautifully designed packaged bags. All that's left for you to do is try them on!"

"Whether you love Lip Gloss, Lip Stick, Lip Balm or Lip Stain, they'll send you a curated box filled with all of the above every month, so you don't have to worry about replacing them each month!"

The card came with a handy card detailing the products:

Hikari Lipstick in Crush ($13) - Hikari's website describes this as a deep vivid pink.

This is definitely not a color for me so I'll be saving it for a swap or giveaway.

Jordana Lipglaze in Raspberry (1.99) - This is called EasyShine Glossy Lip Color on the packaging and the website.

I wasn't going to try this because it's another one that doesn't suit my skin tone (or my tea-stained teeth), but it smelled like raspberry and I thought that maybe being a gloss, it wouldn't be too pigmented.  I regretted it.  It's more pigmented that I expected and really didn't flatter my coloring.

J.cat Lip Crayon in Red Rose ($3.99)

I'm very critical of reds, but since it was the only thing in the bag that really looked interesting to me, I went with it.  It was really not bad.  I liked the color.  It brought out the pink in my cheeks.  And the formula was nice.  It felt good on my lips.

Apparently Lip Monthly also sends a bonus item that is not lip related.  I received a Sally Hansen Nail Polish in Mighty Mango (~$2).  Again, this is not one a color I would choose for myself, plus I have a plethora of high-quality polishes, so I wasn't thrilled with this either.

I'm not going to bash Lip Monthly.  They're relatively new and need to make some improvements, such as:
  1. If you're going to advertise partnerships with such quality products as GlamNatural, Pixi, and Stila, perhaps you should include something from one of those lines.  Yes, the Hikari lipstick was an expensive brand, but who's heard of it?  And shouldn't the color be something I can use?  Which brings me to number...
  2. There really needs to be some sort of personalization.  I can't pull off the colors of two of the products and didn't like the Sally Hansen polish color at all.
  3. The reward points system is kinda bullshit.  The website states, "Lip Monthly members earn 10 points for each completed product feedback survey (look for the feedback icon on every product detail page)."  Maybe if it was a snake it would bite me, but I scoured the website for a product detail page, and none existed for the products I received.
  4. The shop consisted of exactly 10 items, with a small selection of available colors, none of which I got in my bag so even if I wanted to try one of the lip products in another color, I couldn't.
On a positive note, canceling your subscription is super easy as long as you remember to do so in a timely manner.

Is it worth it to buy a Lip Monthly subscription?  The price is great if you're adventurous and like to try a variety of colors and brands.  For me, the only product I liked retails for $3.99, but I only paid $5 and no shipping, so I'm not complaining.  I got my money's worth.  I checked out the items on the brands websites and not only are the prices on the cards accurate, all of the colors are available so they haven't been discontinued which is a problem I saw other bloggers complain about in past bags.  So they are working on improving.  I'd say within a year when they can customize the bags, it'll be a good program.  For now, I cannot give my endorsement.  How have your experiences with Lip Monthly been?

  1. I agree with you- if they had some sort of personalization that would make this a good program They could have you tell them what colors you perfer and what colors to never send you. I would subscribe if they did that because I'm addicted to lip products! Great review! Oh and the two lip colors do look lovely on you!

    1. Thank you! I will re-subscribe once they've reached their potential. I believe they have a promising premise, and the ability to become a great sub.
